Well I guess that I'll get the ball balling here. My name is Jonathan Peck. I first started playing bluegrass about two+ years ago. My first instrument is guitar, but since discovering the mandolin, I haven't picked on the old six string very much. I now consider the mandolin my first instrument and have been playing for a little over a year now. Playing the mandolin has become a real passion for me and I spend as much time as I can practicing, learning new tunes and getting out to jams.
I've been very impressed with the work being done here on the bluegrass college and I was excited to hear that these good folks were going to start up a forum dedicated to bluegrass music. I hope it catches on and encourage everyone to participate and help create an extension of the learning evironment here. My experience is that if not enough people participate, the few folks that do eventually drift away to a message board that has a larger more active user group. This is our forum, so let's make it a great place to meet other pickers, support each other and exchange information.

I agree with Jonathon. Forums are an extremely useful tool for learning and we should all make an effort to build this one. I just bought my first sqaureneck Dobro two weeks ago and am very excited about learning all there is to know. I've been playing standard guitar for many years which has given me a leg up on the dobro, but as far as bluegrass and a brand new instrument goes I feel like a beginner and like it. I joined this site two days ago and am very happy with it so far. I can't wait to dive in. Happy Thanksgiving!
Happy Thanksgiving, this is something to be thankful about, a place to gather information and network. mighty fine.
Amoret Phillips here I've been playing fiddle now for about a year and a half and I'm completely hooked. Bluegrass college is great I really appreciate the format, the quality of the information... it's the berries.
I'm a very late bloomer Other than playing a few chords and learning some songs out of Bluegrass Songbook 30 years ago (with the guitar) I have not been around bluegrass very much at all, then 3 years ago went to MerleFest and got re-aquainted with the sound.
I play dobro. I might not post all that much but I sure am enjoying this bluegrass college. What songs you working on? I'm in the middle of Salt Creek... am just playing it at slow jam pace.. and am getting ready to start on EMD. I don't know why my "avatar" ? isn't showing up. That's a right fancy name for a picture.

dobro! I've been playing for a few years, have come along a ways, have a long way to go, can't think of a better way to go! BGC is a superb dobro learning resource; if the lessons for the other instruments are anything like the dobro ones, BGC is a real treasure! And the tab matches the audio & video! DobroSummit a couple of weeks ago was also amazing, dobro players be sure to get to one sometime!
Hi all I also enjoy theblugrasscollege
even though I am behind in my lessons...lol
I have been a professional musician
for most of my life until recently-
guitar-slide-lap-pedal steel-etc...
but I also bought a squarenecked dobro
2-3 years ago and have been enjoying
learning the blugrass "book"--some of which, of course,
I had been exposed to and performed over the course of
my career....a lot of crossover technique from steel helps...
seems like quite a few reso heads here
at least as far as initial postings go--
always a good thing---
But I was wondering about this summit?
where and when was it?
guess I am "out of the loop"
or I should be logging into resonation.com more often?
I have been playing upright bass for about two years nows. I currently play a palatino which was ok for learning on. I ordered an Upton hybrid bass last July and hope to pick it up a week from Tuesday. They are located in Mystic, Conn.
I have been playing guitar since I was nine years old which was forty some odd years ago. I played mostly country for most of that time. I went to a bluegrass festival three years ago and was hooked. After watching Missy, Bub, Micky Harris and Marshall play on stage that was it for me.
I signed up for a bluegrass camp next July which is called the Augusta Heritage located in Elkins, WV. The instructors for bass are Missy Rains and Mike Bub. I look forward to attending and comming back a little smarter.
Mando here... playing about 4-5 years, started from scratch, bluegrass was all new to me. Been here since about Feb, have downloaded one song lessons per month.
Bluegrass Breakdown has to be my altime favorite picking tune, and the version here one of the cleanest tighest versions to jam with. Wish I could hit all those notes, but at least I can keep up !
These lessons are excellent, and the performance tunes are great just to listen to.
My name is Ben and I've been playing music my entire life. Started on Cello and guitar. Although my family has always been heavy in to bluegrass music, I never really followed suit. That is, until this past April, when I went to MerleFest. I purchased a Dobro there, and have learning ever since. I even managed to get a lesson with Mike Auldridge. I hpe to have another one soon. I"m currently working on Shenandoah Valley Breakdown.
Hi. My name is Chip and I'm a grassaholic. I started out early on piano and then tried something different, the accordion eventually graduating to an electric one. I experimented later on with the clarinet only to find myself first chair which I didn't expect. I thought I would try something heavier so I purchased a Hammond B3 which almost killed me so I stepped back a little and bought a porta B. Same result just not as heavy. Thought I would try something a little easier on the body so I eventually switched over to guitar for almost 30 years and now realize the errors of youth and decided enough was enough and bought a mandolin years ago. Unfortunately these turned out to be like pototae chips and now I have 4 of them. I'm trying hard to wean off a little but it's really difficult. Thanks Bluegrass College for being there for me.
