Sound won't come through

Using Windows XP

I downloaded a MP3 backup tempo mix from Bluegrass College to My Music. Opened Audacity 1.3, then File, Import, Audio and selected the mix in My Music, then Open. Hit the Play button, but no Wave Form or sound. Also tried File, Open to get the mix to appear but with same result. The Software Playthrough is checked.

Didn't work on the old version of Audacity either. We are close, I think, but something is missing.

Any ideas? Thanks!!

let me start by saying I'm not a banjo player

I'm a dobro player... but I'm working on Lonesome Moonlight Waltz. Am I hearing it wrong or is there an error in the 2nd measure, 2nd note in Part A Easier solo? I also am wondering why he has you play the 1st string open then on the third string when it would be easier to play the 4th string 3rd fret where your finger already is with the Dm chord.

?

I love this college and really hope it doesn't go away.

The Good the Bad & the Ugly

Hi Guys...

I have just started out learning to play the banjo and I have been searching the internet looking for some quality instructional DVDs to buy.

Some of the free video clips on YouTube are Good, some are Bad and some are downright Ugly... And I would like to call on your experience for some advice.

Whilst many of the Free Lessons proport to be instructional very few of the video's I have watched actually explain which strings are being played and in which sequence. The best one I have seen so far is Banjo in the Hollow - Murphy Method. However the vast majority simply play the music slowly and it is not always easy to pick up what is actually happening.

I am hoping you guys can offer a word of advice on which videos to buy and which to avoid. I wish to avoid Frailing and Clawhammer and favour Earl Scruggs style..

Keep on a pickin
Tam

Teory behind Clinch mountain backstep

I have played a little banjo, FMB, Scruggs style and so on. When I heared Clinch Mountian backstep it sounded different, kind of minorisch. I downloaded the tune and saw the differens. In my eyes fhe banjo used the minor scale. Funny because the backup played in Mayor.
I made a test and played guitarr together with the band and I could play in either minor or mayor and it didn´t sound wrong. I have played backup for a irish mandoline and then I used modal chords and even those worked whith Clinch Mountain.
Is there anybody who knows enogh teory to exlaine this for me? Is it a modal fiddletune from the beginning? Are there more tunes of this kind? What´s the history?
It sounds very nice!

Renée from Sweden

Computer program that plays tabs...

For those of us that have a difficult time learning directly from a tab, there is a free program that will play tabs. Go to www.tabledit.com and download the free player. Then google "banjo tabs" and select tabs that are written in tabledit and download your song. This program will play the tab and you can also slow the speed, and isolate different measures. It is a great learning tool!

Flatt & Scruggs FMBn

I've been watching those "Flatt & Scruggs" TV shows and I've noticed that Earl does some backing stuff - off camera that is almost melodic on FMB. I'm also wondering about [actual] tab for his 'part three' of FMB.
