Moving from A to F style mandolin

Hello!
I'm am a long time guitar player that has picked up the mandolin. I've been playing an A style for about a year, and I just bought an F style. I'm noticing that I click my pick on the fret board of the F style. I'm used to resting my palm on the bridge, and the space between the bridge and the last fret is of course shorter on the F style. Is this something where I should learn to pick differently or are some people A players and some F players? I hope this question isn't stupid.

Thanks!
Keny Mc

Anyone know this song?

Hi there,

I recall listening to this great song at a festival but I just can't remember the name of the song. It has lyrics that go something to the effect of:" .... swinging on the old swinging bridge, (way up on the high?) rocky ridge.... when I first kissed you..."

I'd appreciate it if anyone could enlighten me as to the title of the number.

Thanks.

Banjonutjob

Is this the place to say howdy?

Howdy/Hola/Bonjour, from Alberta, Canada.
I just found Bluegrass Collage.org, looks like a pretty cool site.
I'm a DJ on WWW.bluegrassmix.com an internet radio site with servers down in Virginia, my broadcast Alberta Bluegrass Bound can be heard every Friday and Saturday nights at 9pm.
How did I find Bluegrass Collage.org you ask?
Which flat pickin' pick should I pick?

Hey. Mike here. I'm 47 and been playing around on the guitar since I was 16. Re-discovered bluegrass about 4 years ago, when I returned from Afghanistan. Started playing everyday and trying very hard to become profficient at flat picking. The problem I'm having is I can't find a pick that I'm completely satisfied with. I like the nylon .73's for strumming, but when I try to flatpick a break, the pick moves around too much in my hand. I tried the Dava picks with the rubber grip, but I don't really like the tone I get. I don't know...maybe my technique needs some work. Any advice would sure be appreciated. Thanks.

How do you tap your foot when playing bluegrass tunes?

Hi everyone!

I have a question about foot tapping: how do you tap your foot when you play the fiddle in order to get that back-beat feel? I normally play Scottish style and I am struggling big-time to get the bluegrass "feel" when I play bluegrass tunes, probably because I don't feel the back-beat enough. I play more straight and I'm told I need to play with that kind of bluegrass swing instead.

Somebody told me to try and tap my foot off the beat rather than on the beat, but that seems really hard to me..... Does anybody do this type of foot tapping when playing bluegrass tunes in order to get the right feel?

Many thanks,
Sofie

Buying my first bass

They are expensive, and a long term investment. I could use some advice.

But first a little about myself. I've been playing the bass guitar for 5 years and decided to pick up the upright earlier this year. I rented one for the duration of the school year and enrolled in a classical strings class and I seem to be progressing well. I have recently developed an affinity for bluegrass music, and have been jamming regularly with a guitar and fiddle player.

I would like to buy a bass, but I don't have much money as I am a university student. The rental I'm playing now is worth about $2,300 (CAD). Is it likely that I would be able to find a bass for just over $1000? I have been told that a basses under $2000 are cheaply built and not worth the money, but there is no way I will be able to afford a $2000 bass for a few years.

I know nothing about brands, models, or what to listen for in tone. What sort of bass do you play? What is your experience? Any tips as to how I might find a good deal?

TL;DR: Need a bass, don't have much cash/experience. Tips?
