What instrument do you play

Well I guess that I'll get the ball balling here. My name is Jonathan Peck. I first started playing bluegrass about two+ years ago. My first instrument is guitar, but since discovering the mandolin, I haven't picked on the old six string very much. I now consider the mandolin my first instrument and have been playing for a little over a year now. Playing the mandolin has become a real passion for me and I spend as much time as I can practicing, learning new tunes and getting out to jams.

I've been very impressed with the work being done here on the bluegrass college and I was excited to hear that these good folks were going to start up a forum dedicated to bluegrass music. I hope it catches on and encourage everyone to participate and help create an extension of the learning evironment here. My experience is that if not enough people participate, the few folks that do eventually drift away to a message board that has a larger more active user group. This is our forum, so let's make it a great place to meet other pickers, support each other and exchange information.

-jonathan

I agree with Jonathon. Forums are an extremely useful tool for learning and we should all make an effort to build this one. I just bought my first sqaureneck Dobro two weeks ago and am very excited about learning all there is to know. I've been playing standard guitar for many years which has given me a leg up on the dobro, but as far as bluegrass and a brand new instrument goes I feel like a beginner and like it. I joined this site two days ago and am very happy with it so far. I can't wait to dive in. Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving, this is something to be thankful about, a place to gather information and network. mighty fine.
Amoret Phillips here I've been playing fiddle now for about a year and a half and I'm completely hooked. Bluegrass college is great I really appreciate the format, the quality of the information... it's the berries.

I'm a very late bloomer Other than playing a few chords and learning some songs out of Bluegrass Songbook 30 years ago (with the guitar) I have not been around bluegrass very much at all, then 3 years ago went to MerleFest and got re-aquainted with the sound.

~Amoret Phillips

dobro! I've been playing for a few years, have come along a ways, have a long way to go, can't think of a better way to go! BGC is a superb dobro learning resource; if the lessons for the other instruments are anything like the dobro ones, BGC is a real treasure! And the tab matches the audio & video! DobroSummit a couple of weeks ago was also amazing, dobro players be sure to get to one sometime!

I have been playing upright bass for about two years nows. I currently play a palatino which was ok for learning on. I ordered an Upton hybrid bass last July and hope to pick it up a week from Tuesday. They are located in Mystic, Conn.

I have been playing guitar since I was nine years old which was forty some odd years ago. I played mostly country for most of that time. I went to a bluegrass festival three years ago and was hooked. After watching Missy, Bub, Micky Harris and Marshall play on stage that was it for me.

I signed up for a bluegrass camp next July which is called the Augusta Heritage located in Elkins, WV. The instructors for bass are Missy Rains and Mike Bub. I look forward to attending and comming back a little smarter.

Rob

Hi. My name is Chip and I'm a grassaholic. I started out early on piano and then tried something different, the accordion eventually graduating to an electric one. I experimented later on with the clarinet only to find myself first chair which I didn't expect. I thought I would try something heavier so I purchased a Hammond B3 which almost killed me so I stepped back a little and bought a porta B. Same result just not as heavy. Thought I would try something a little easier on the body so I eventually switched over to guitar for almost 30 years and now realize the errors of youth and decided enough was enough and bought a mandolin years ago. Unfortunately these turned out to be like pototae chips and now I have 4 of them. I'm trying hard to wean off a little but it's really difficult. Thanks Bluegrass College for being there for me.

Pablo, I'm a fairly skilled musician. I hacked at a guitar for many years, then picked up a mandolin and started playing professionally. Things took off from there. The BGC lessons are easy (though not fast) for me. I print out the tab and review it. I try to play through the tab a few times, and then I cue up the learning track. I graduate myself up to performance level. If I have my sights set on a particular tune I can generally have it up to slow-jam tempo within a couple of weeks. It takes some pretty intense focus to accomplish this, but I do it pretty reliably. This is good stuff here, and the only substitute is hanging out in the weeds until you can catch up.

Re:What instrument do you play

Hi, I am Laura, a dobro player from Northern California, up in the Sierras. My husband, a banjo player, bought me a dobro for my birthday 4 1/2 years ago. Since I had never played a stringed instrument, I was too afraid of the thing to even take it out of the case for about 6 months! Then when my younger child went back to college 4 years ago in January, I vowed to start playing, and I haven't really looked back since. It's not at all easy to start learning an instrument in middle age. Even a year ago I think this college would have been too difficult and discouraging/intimidating for me. Right now it is perfect. I don't even attempt the harder versions of the tunes yet. The "easy" ones are enough of a challenge. I think it's interesting how many dobro players are on this forum. Maybe it's because there is relatively a lot less learning material out there available for dobro.

I am really grateful that this site is available. Godwin, as a dobro player totally new to a stringed instrument, I found the Murphy Method dobro video by Mark Panfil to be just what I needed. It doesn't use tab, and he is so patient. I have met Murphy Henry (a wonderful banjo teacher) several times, and each time I tell her that I have her to thank for giving me the gift of being able to play the dobro. (Here is the web address: http://www.murphymethod.com/) I found the Cashdollar DVD too hard to start, but I did use it a year or so later, when I wasn't so overwhelmed by all I had to learn. Good luck. It's a long road of learning, but it sure is worth it - and a lot of fun. I have trouble tearing myself away from my dobro to do anything else these days!

Hell All-
I'm from eastern KY and I pick the banjo. I started playing about ten years ago, but took a bit of a hiatus, for a thousand or so days, somewhere in the middle. I've since renewed my interest and have become fairly committed. I try to practice as much as possible and pick with friends a couple times a week. Like others have said, BGC is a great resource and I'm eating it up. I have really learned some good endings for songs that you can use for ending other songs you already know in the same key. You can also modify them alittle and use them to adlib in various other songs in fills. Anyway, I like this stuff...if I had one thing that I would suggest to make it any better, it would be that some of the camera angles do not show the left hand finger on string as good as it could with just a little change in camer angle in the fiddle lessons. Some are perfect angles and some lessons need a better angle. Over all I find bluegrass college to be great for taking your skills to a higher level. Thanks

All fired up about my fiddle - It used to be a violin, but now it is starting to sound like the fiddle it was meant to be. Practice practice practice - can't wait to practice each day. Will start on my free lesson today - can't wait to get to it. Thanks for any advice - love this forum, love this site.

Re:What instrument do you play

I play fiddle. Didnt start playing til I was 47 so it's been a rough road. 3 years into it, i can play several parlor/contest pieces and am struggling to learn to 'play well with others' and improvise a bit. I can 'hear' what I want to do but can see that I'm not as familiar with my instrument as i should be. memorizing a contest piece is NOT the same and truly learning to play! I'm downloading my first BC lesson today and looking forward to getting off this plateau i'm stuck on!

Re:What instrument do you play

Well I played mediocre bluegrass banjo for about 8 years, then just gave up, sold my instrument and stopped playing altogether. Fast forward about 10 years or so and I decided to try playing again, but flatpicking guitar this time around. I had a knowledge of guitar chords from fooling with it about 40 years ago, but other than that, it's been a fresh start. I'm enjoying it tremendously, and since I recently retired, I have more free time for picking!

Max in Arizona
